SES have developed and used UV-C Disinfection very successfully to Kill dangerous pathogens in drinking water for use by everyone in the UK, including those with compromised immune systems.

“We now fully realise that volumes of Air, just like water, now need to be disinfected to kill dangerous pathogens before the human body ingests the air we breathe, like the safe water we consume. UV-C is the best solution to kill dangerous pathogens in the indoor and communal or public building spaces we use every day. Keep buildings open.”

Luxibel Evidence

Signify and Phillips, the world leader in lighting, together with the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University in the US have conducted research that validates the effectiveness of Signify and Phillips UV-C light sources on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Luxibel uses scientifically proven UVC light sources by Phillips.

Since the start of the SARS CoV-2 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine and his team have been working on developing tools to support scientific advancement in this field. During their research, they have treated inoculated material with different doses of UV-C radiation coming from a Signify light source and assessed the inactivation capacity under various conditions. The team applied a dose of 5mJ/cm2, resulting in a reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of 99% in 6 seconds. Based on the data, it was determined that a dose of 22mJ/cm2 will result in a reduction of 99.9999% in 25 seconds.

“Our test results show that above a specific dose of UV-C radiation, viruses were completely inactivated: in a matter of seconds we could no longer detect any virus. We’re very excited about these findings and hope that this will accelerate the development of products that can help limit the spread of COVID-19,” Dr. Griffiths added.

Signify and Phillips is the leader in UV-C light sources and has been at the forefront of UV technology for more than 35 years. It has a proven track record of innovation in UV-C lighting, which is designed, manufactured and installed in line with the highest safety standards.

Airius PureAir

PHI Advanced Oxidisation Technology was first developed over 20 years ago and over 1 Million PHI cells are in use around the world.

OZONE ANALYSIS

The PureAir series has been rigorously tested to ensure it meets all types of safety criteria, including Ozone.

All test results have shown in the 0.01 ppm range or below, measuring approximately one fifth the FDA and California safety limits for Ozone levels. In a 12 month study by Disney Hotels, ambient room Ozone levels were actually lower in rooms with PHI Technology than in those rooms without.

TEST DATA

PureAir has been tested and studied by third party independent testing laboratories and Universities. PHI Products are not medical devices and no medical claims are made.

Plasma Air

The advent of the Covid-19 global pandemic has led to great interest in technologies that are able to limit the exposure of individuals in communal spaces to such aerosolised pathogens. One such technology is Bi Polar Ionisation, which is able to remove from the environment a variety of pollutants including viruses. Finding a way to formally test the efficacy of Bi Polar Ionisation on destruction of viruses, in particular Covid-19 is, however, not straight forward.

Primarily, spraying around a deadly pathogen (such as Covid-19) to test the efficacy of a decontamination method (such as Bi Polar Ionisation), poses important health and safety issues to both those performing the experiment and the wider community, should the virus escape the containment of the research facility. As such, the UK government have classified any Covid-19 research, including propagation and culturing as Containment Level 3 activity (the highest being Containment Level 4) based on the viruses infectivity and consequences of such infection.  To put this into context, other examples of Containment Level 3 pathogens are Yellow Fever, Rabies and HIV.

Therefore, safer surrogate markers of viral destruction have been used. One such example is the MS2 bacteriophage (essentially a virus that infects and kills bacteria cells rather than human cells) is a no to very low risk (Spanish Royal Decree 664/1997) way of demonstrating the efficacy of Bi Polar Ionisation for destroying viruses that are desiccation resistant and withstand aerosolisation.

MS2 was used to demonstrate the efficacy of Bi-polar Ionisation technology in a hotel room at Madrid airport. The study was undertaken by the Biological Defence Laboratory of the Spanish Ministry of Defence with the test results being certified by the Director of INTA, Ministry of Defence, Spain. View the Report Summary here.

The aim of the study was to measure the effectiveness of the Plasma Air ionisation technique as an effective technology to reduce SARS-CoV-2 surrogate, the bacteriophage MS2, which was nebulised into a hotel room. The Plasma Air type PA600 (Plasma Air International) equipment was installed in the entrance to the fan coil unit of the supply Air Duct in the room.

Importantly, the conclusion: “From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the installation of the Plasma Air bipolar cold plasma ionization system has been effective, under the conditions tested, to reduce by approximately 99% the concentration of the bacteriophage MS2 in the air and almost 80% on the surfaces tested in the room, such as table and mask”.

The report can be broken down into 3 sections, the first 3 pages are a summary in English, pages 4-24 are the original Spanish report and pages 25-41 are the English translation of the report. View the Report Summary here.

This viral destruction by Bi Polar Ionisation highlighted by the testing in Madrid has recently been shown to be transferable to actual Covid-19 in a small scale study by Nagasaki University in partnership with SHARP. In the study, a reduction of 91.3% was achieved in just 30 seconds.

Whilst demonstrating efficacy in a 3 litre container is not that conclusive by itself, the combination of the two results is compelling.

The Aerosol Threat – How can we make our Schools, Offices and Homes safer? The Scientific American tells us that with airborne COVID-19 transmission, there is a lot more we can do besides masks, social distancing and washing our hands. It’s time to step up our game and think more like the engineers who are trying to help us solve this problem.
